The Rise of Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE)
Eosinophilic esophagitis is an allergic inflammatory condition of the esophagus that’s becoming increasingly common in children. Understanding this condition is crucial for early diagnosis and treatment.
What is EoE?
EoE occurs when eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) accumulate in the esophagus, causing inflammation and damage. This leads to difficulty swallowing and food impaction.
Symptoms in Children:
- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
- Food impaction (food getting stuck)
- Chest pain or abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Poor growth or failure to thrive
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis requires an upper endoscopy with biopsy. The esophagus typically shows rings, furrows, or white spots when examined.
Treatment Options:
- Topical corticosteroids (swallowed, not inhaled)
- Elimination diet (removing common allergens)
- Biologic medications for severe cases
Prognosis:
With proper treatment, most children with EoE can manage symptoms effectively and maintain normal growth and development.
